Abingdon Community Center Opens its Doors to New Opportunities
The Forgottonia Times™ Report
On August 15, the Abingdon Community Center celebrated its grand opening that marked a major milestone for the town. Once an outdated old nursing home on the brink of closure, the building at 801 W. Martin St. has been revitalized into a hub for small businesses and community events.
Ric Fritz, Pastor of New Harvest Church and President of the Abingdon Community Center, reflected on how far the facility has come. "Gifted to the church in 2018 the facility struggled to discover its purpose to the community. However, in 2022 steps of faith were taken to start freshening and transforming the facility. Several community spaces were created available for rent." Pastor Ric continued, “It wasn't until the arrival of several businesses that a new future came into shape."
The grand opening featured six locally owned businesses now operating inside the center: a chiropractor, a quilting shop, a clothing boutique, a salon, a holistic therapist, and a bowling ball drilling service. One of those business owners, Sabra Robb of The Quilting EMT, shared how special the opportunity has been. “The Abingdon Community Center has given myself and others the opportunity to have a store front when we would not be able to otherwise,” Robb said. “Its a very unique atmosphere here at the community center, it's almost like we are family.”
Robb, who opened her quilting and fabric store in May, emphasized the supportive environment the center fosters. “We are all here promoting each other and are ready to jump in and help when someone needs help,” she explained.
The weekend celebration also included a highlight for the center’s future growth. Dave Dunn of Dave’s Auto Body presented a $13,000 grant, secured through the Galesburg Community Foundation’s Turn-Out Grant program. According to Pastor Ric, the funds will provide heating and cooling units for future rooms, as well as tables and chairs for the community space. The Cupboard and Closet also remains in the Community Center, continuing to serve the community with its food and clothing bank.
With its mix of shopping, services, and event space, the Abingdon Community Center is quickly becoming a highlight of local life. Residents are encouraged to utilize the community spaces for events and to stop by, explore the shops, and support the small businesses helping the town thrive.
