Lifelong Learning Conference Returns with History, Stories, and Hands-On Discovery

Spoon River College and MidAmerica National Bank will host the 33rd Lifelong Learning Conference on Friday, October 10, 2025, at the SRC Conference Center in Canton. The event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with check-in beginning at 8:00 a.m.
The conference offers a full day of engaging sessions, local history, interactive workshops, and thought-provoking discussions.
The day begins at 9:00 a.m. with a keynote presentation, “Mary Todd Lincoln: Mad or Misunderstood?” where Rick Klinedinst will explore the controversial First Lady who influenced Abraham Lincoln’s rise while challenging societal expectations.
Morning sessions include Col. Steve Rice’s look at Fulton County’s role in the Civil War, Janice Bruster and Cheryl Bielema’s celebration of 13 sesquicentennial farms as part of Canton’s Bicentennial, and Kevin Meade’s lively introduction to genealogy resources.
After a Resource Fair at 11:00 a.m., attendees will enjoy a soup and sandwich buffet at 11:45, with vegetarian and dietary options available.
The afternoon continues with two more rounds of sessions. At 12:30, Stan Ransom will discuss Eleanor Roosevelt’s journey from a difficult childhood to becoming the First Lady of the World, while Steve Tarter, retired journalist and podcast host, presents his eclectic “Read Beat” program, highlighting nonfiction topics from WWII to wildlife.
At 1:30, Christine Wright returns with A Year of Sunflowers, a hands-on floral design class, while Mike Delligati shares stories, visuals, and trivia in Seven Wonders of the World.
