Canton Takes Action to Reverse the Exodus of Young Adults
By - Jennie Grove, Marketing & Tourism Director
Census data shows that rural communities across the country are seeing a decline in residents under 35. Canton is taking steps to reverse that trend with a community event designed to retain and attract young adults and families.
A lower median age and a thriving younger generation are vital for Canton’s future:
- Economic Growth: Young adults fuel local businesses, start new ventures, and bring fresh ideas to the workforce.
- Community Vitality: Families and younger residents help schools, organizations, and local events thrive.
- Long-Term Stability: A balanced population ensures services, housing, and infrastructure remain strong for all residents.
Reversing the Exodus will be held Tuesday, November 12th at 5:30 PM at the Donaldson Center, Canton Park District. The event, hosted by the Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development and University of Illinois Extension, will feature a research-based presentation, a panel discussion, and a light meal. Local officials, business owners, community leaders, and residents are encouraged to attend to learn, listen, and join the conversation about the future of Canton.
A key part of the event is the Youth Panel, which will feature 10–15 young adults sharing their perspectives on why young people leave rural communities and what strategies could encourage them to stay or move to the area. We are seeking young adults ages 18–35 who either grew up in Canton and stayed, moved away, or have moved into Canton. The application process is private, but panelists should be comfortable speaking publicly during the event. “This is a unique opportunity for the community to come together, hear directly from young adults, and begin shaping a stronger, more vibrant future for Canton,” said Spoon River Partnership’s Executive Director, Michelle Spiva. “Even if you’re not on the panel, we encourage everyone to attend, listen, and share your ideas.”
This event will take place Tuesday, November 12th at 5:30pm at Donaldson Center, Canton Park District. A light meal will be included. For more information or media inquiries, contact Michelle Spiva, Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development (309)647-2677 Ext. 4 mspiva@cantonillinois.org.
