Abingdon Community Festival Movie Nights Return

By: Forgottonia Times™ Report

The Abingdon Community Festival is once again transforming its fairgrounds into a nostalgic movie-watching experience under the stars. Kicking off May 16-17 with "Shrek" and "Grease," this year's Family-Friendly Drive-In Movie Nights will continue every weekend through early June, offering double features like "Megamind" and "Batman" (May 23-24), "Finding Nemo" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" (May 30-31), and "Cars" with "Talladega Nights" (June 6-7). Admission and concessions proceeds support ongoing restoration efforts across the fairgrounds. Gates open at dusk, and movies will roll once it's dark!

Drive-in nights are part of the Abingdon Community Festival's fundraising efforts to maintain and improve its historic grounds. These events not only bring families together but help fund major improvements like a new roof for the small livestock barn and painting the merchant building. The road to those improvements is a long one, but one that the Festival Board is eager to embark on for the sake of the community and upkeep of the grounds.

Established in 1954, the Abingdon Community Festival has long been a fixture in the town's culture, offering traditional events such as livestock shows, vegetable and flower exhibits and kids' games. The 2025 festival will take place August 20th–24th.

In addition to the movie nights, a weekly Farmers Market will run Fridays from May 2 through September 26 (except August 22 during the festival), from 4–6pm. The highly anticipated Figure 8 'Merica Race will gather the crowds on July 5, with doors opening at 4:00 pm for the public to come to watch an unforgettable race.

Community members are encouraged to attend events, donate, and volunteer. The Fair Board is currently looking for individuals who are interested in volunteering to join the Board and be a part of making the Fair even bigger and better!

For event updates or weather cancellations, follow the Abingdon Community Festival on Facebook. Grab your lawn chairs, pack some blankets, and head outside to the fairgrounds for a night of fun, film, and fundraising.
