Dalton Deener to Ride 1,000 Miles Across Florida for Disability Advocacy

By: Forgottonia Times™ Report

Dalton Deener, an alumnus of Macomb High School and Western Illinois University, is preparing to undertake an extraordinary journey as a participant in Gear Up Florida—a grueling 1,000-mile cycling expedition from Miami to Tallahassee. The event, organized by The Ability Experience, runs from May 10 to May 24 and is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for individuals with disabilities throughout Florida.

Deener joins a group of cyclists who will traverse the state as part of this annual initiative. Established to promote acceptance, inclusion, and accessibility, Gear Up Florida allows participants to connect with local communities, visit disability support organizations, and engage in advocacy efforts throughout their ride. Riders make friendship visits along the way, offering encouragement and support to those with disabilities while raising funds to enhance their quality of life. At the conclusion of each visit, the cyclists provide a grant to the organizations to help operational costs and to support the disabled community.

The route poses significant physical challenges, with long distances, difficult terrain, and varying weather conditions. Despite these obstacles, the riders are driven by their purpose to create a more inclusive society. Deener has been actively fundraising to support the cause, with donations contributing directly to programs that empower individuals with disabilities. In 2023, Deener participated in a cross-country cycling trip – spanning from Seattle to Washington D.C. – for the same cause.

Anyone interested in contributing to the cause can scan the provided QR code to access Deener’s fundraising page. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. Deener is proud to represent McDonough County on this meaningful ride and would appreciate all the support he can get from his community.
